Collahuasi Copper Mine, Chile

Collahuasi Copper Mine, Chile

Collahuasi mine, the third largest copper mine in the world, is situated in Chile’s remote Atacama Desert.  The mine, developed in 1990’s at a cost of US$1.7B, underwent a US$584M expansion programme which increased the mine's capacity to 500,000t/yr of copper by 2004.

After almost a year of successful operation, an incident occurred with the gearless drive to the 40’ Ø SAG Mill, installed as part of the mine’s recent expansion, which resulted in damage to the drive unit.

ICC were retained undertake a preliminary review of the cause of the damage and to advise on the most appropriate “world expert” to undertake a more detailed investigation of the loss.
