Collahuasi Copper Mine, Chile
Collahuasi mine, the
third largest copper mine in the world, is situated in Chile’s
remote Atacama Desert. The mine, developed in 1990’s at a cost of
US$1.7B, underwent a US$584M expansion programme which increased the
mine's capacity to 500,000t/yr of copper by 2004.
After almost a year
of successful operation, an incident occurred with the gearless
drive to the 40’ Ø SAG Mill, installed as part of the mine’s recent
expansion, which resulted in damage to the drive unit.
ICC were retained
undertake a preliminary review of the cause of the damage and to
advise on the most appropriate “world expert” to undertake a more
detailed investigation of the loss.
